Description:  Creamy Baked Green Beans Topped with Crispy Fried Onions

Preparation time: about 45 minutes

Serves: 6


2 tbsp. flour
2 tbsp. butter
1 cup milk, hot
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 cup grated white cheddar cheese
2 lbs. green beans, fresh, frozen, whole or Frenched
1 can (12 ounce) French's Fried Onions (available in more markets)


Melt the butter in a sauce pan over med-low heat, add the flour and stir to a paste, cook 2 minutes. Whisk in the hot milk, salt, pepper, onion powder and sugar, reduce heat to low and cook slowly for 5 minutes at barely a simmer. Stir in the cheese and beans and stir well. Place in a 1 1/2 quart buttered casserole and top with the fried onions. Bake at 350 for 30
